Bartenders are the best listeners in the world, so it comes as no surprise that Rick Ballou fine-tuned his craft and actually got his first big break while mixing cocktails. After a few years of listening to every kind of sports story and debate, Ballou ruled when it came to high-spirited conversation. The rest, they say, is history.
At the famous Docks Sports Bar in Tallahassee, FL, Ballou met Tom Block, host of the sports talk show Ballou listened to in his headphones when he jogged. Ballou eventually parlayed the friendship into an internship, lining up guests and fetching hot coffee.
It soon became clear that the intern was a champion of sports facts and possessed all the makings of a sports talk host. Ballou’s special listening skills—mastered while tending bar—and entertaining, take-no-prisoners approach to sports talk made him a natural. When Tom Block moved on to ABC’s local TV station, Ballou took over the 1-hour show in 1994. Since then, Ballou has earned a reputation for hosting aggressive, fast-paced and hard-hitting sports talk shows. What keeps the fans coming back is Ballou’s creative and entertaining way of working in his listeners’ opinions.
